The Guide to Starting a Hotel Gym
Sep 02, 2026- gym Hotel
A hotel gym is no longer simply a room with a treadmill, a few dumbbells and a sign on the door. For today’s travellers, fitness and wellness are increasingly part of the overall hotel experience - and a well-designed gym can add genuine value to a stay.
The space needs to reflect your guests, your hotel and the experience you want to deliver. Here’s what to consider when starting a hotel gym.
Start With the Guest Experience
Before choosing a single piece of equipment, consider who will actually use the gym.
Hotel guests have very different training habits. Some may be experienced gym-goers who want to maintain their usual routine while travelling, while others may only have 20 minutes between meetings or before a flight. Families, leisure travellers, athletes and wellness-focused guests can all have different expectations.
The goal is to create a space that feels accessible to everyone without compromising on quality. A well-rounded hotel gym might include dedicated areas for cardio, strength, functional training, wellness and recovery, allowing guests to choose how they want to train.
Ease of use is equally important. Equipment should be intuitive, clearly positioned and easy to access, particularly in a hotel environment where guests may be unfamiliar with the space.
Design the Space Around How Guests Move
Hotel gyms often have a smaller footprint than dedicated health clubs, which makes smart planning essential. The objective isn't to fit in as much commercial gym equipment as possible - it's to make every square metre work.
Consider how guests will move through the room. Cardio equipment should have adequate spacing, strength areas need enough room for safe movement and functional training zones should not interfere with other users. Storage, flooring, mirrors, lighting, ventilation and access points all need to be considered as part of the overall design.
This is where custom gym design can make a significant difference. Rather than working from a standard equipment package, the space can be planned around the hotel's available footprint, architectural features and intended guest experience.

Choose Equipment for Your Guests, Not Just the Room
Once the space has been planned, equipment selection becomes much easier.
A hotel gym doesn't necessarily need every type of machine available on the market. Instead, the focus should be on selecting equipment that gives guests meaningful training options while being durable enough for a commercial environment.
Cardio will typically form the foundation, with options such as treadmills, bikes, cross trainers and stair climbers catering to different training preferences. Strength training is then built around a combination of selectorised machines, free weights and functional equipment.
Think about the balance between simplicity and variety. Too little equipment can make a gym feel limited, while too much can make a smaller space feel crowded and intimidating.
Build Wellness Into the Experience
The modern hotel gym can be about much more than exercise.
Wellness has become an increasingly important part of the hospitality experience, creating opportunities for hotels to incorporate recovery and relaxation alongside traditional training. Depending on the available space, this could include dedicated stretching areas, recovery technology, Pilates, mobility equipment, sauna facilities or other spa and wellness offerings.
This approach can also help differentiate a hotel. A thoughtfully designed wellness space gives guests another reason to use the facilities and can reinforce the hotel's broader health and wellbeing offering.
The key is integration. Wellness shouldn't feel like an unrelated addition to the gym; it should form part of a cohesive experience that takes guests from training through to recovery.

Make the Gym Feel Like Part of the Hotel
One of the biggest mistakes when designing a hotel gym is treating it as a separate space.
The gym should feel like an extension of the property. Its materials, finishes, lighting and equipment should complement the hotel's existing aesthetic and brand positioning.
For a luxury property, that might mean premium equipment, sophisticated finishes and carefully considered lighting. A boutique hotel may take a more distinctive approach, using the gym as an opportunity to reinforce its personality.

Plan for Performance Beyond Opening Day
A hotel gym is a long-term investment. Unlike a private home gym, equipment can be used by hundreds or thousands of guests over its lifetime, making durability and ongoing support critical considerations from the beginning.
Ask your supplier about installation, servicing, replacement parts, warranties and ongoing support. A proactive approach to maintenance can help identify wear and potential issues before they result in equipment downtime. Having access to reliable gym equipment repairs can help minimise disruption to guests.
